涩里番 Hosts 5th Annual Gulf Coast Steinway Competition on Jan. 18

MOBILE, Ala. 鈥 The 涩里番 will host the 5th annual Gulf Coast Steinway Competition on 听Jan. 18 at 9 a.m. in Martin Hall, 5735 College Parkway, Mobile, Alabama 36613. Admission is free.

Young pianists and instrumentalists from across the South will have the opportunity to perform and work with national and international teachers. The 44 students from ages 12-22 will compete on Jan. 18.

Participants in the solo piano category will perform two to three pieces of contrasting style and winners will be awarded cash prizes. Winners in the concerto competition will also earn a cash prize.

The Gulf Coast Steinway Society is a non-profit organization formed by the director of piano studies and professor of music in the Alabama School of the Arts at the 涩里番 and Steinway artist, Dr. Kadisha Onalbayeva, and others. The Gulf Coast Steinway Society is devoted to promoting fine music through education and performance along the Gulf Coast region.

涩里番 Hosts 55th Anniversary Miss 涩里番 Competition on Jan. 18

MOBILE, Ala. 鈥 涩里番 celebrates the 55th anniversary of the Miss UM competition听on Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. at Saraland High School, 1115 Industrial Pkwy, Saraland, Alabama 36571.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at the door for $10.

Current Miss UM, Raven Young, is a junior majoring in worship leadership and elementary education.

Miss UM serves as the official hostess of the university and will represent the university at the Miss Alabama competition. Her responsibilities include participation in alumni activities, homecoming, dedications, receptions, and various community and student events.

The Miss UM 2020 contestants are:

  • Abigail Pauley 鈥 Musical Theatre major from Statesville, NC . Her platform is 鈥淏onds Without Borders.鈥 Her talent is vocal performance: 听鈥淒efying Gravity鈥 by Steven Schwartz from the musical Wicked.
  • Ashton Mack 鈥 Worship Leadership 鈥 Music Business major from Opp, Alabama. Her platform is 鈥淲ho Are You Wearing?鈥 Her talent is spoken word: 鈥淪he is鈥 by Ashton Mack
  • Claire Wood 鈥 Worship Leadership 鈥 Church Ministry major from Ozark, Alabama. Her platform is 鈥淐ultivate to Create.鈥 Her talent is vocal performance: 鈥淵ou Will Be Found鈥 by Pasek and Paul from Dear Evan Hansen.
  • Breanna Stringfellow 鈥 English and Philosophy major from Grand Bay, Alabama. Her platform is 鈥淭he D.R.E.A.M. Initiative.鈥 Her talent is vocal performance: 鈥淛ust a Closer Walk with Thee鈥 by Kenneth Morris.
  • Katherine Breeding 鈥 Nursing major from Little Rock, Arkansas. Her platform is 鈥淧roject Purpose.鈥 Her talent is vocal performance: 鈥淛ourney to The Past鈥 by Ahrens & Flaherty from Anastasia.
  • Abigail Breland 鈥 Nursing major from Little Rock, Arkansas. Her platform is 鈥淭rue Identity.鈥 Her talent is vocal performance: 鈥淪mile鈥 by Geoffrey Parsons.
