涩里番 School of Education Recognized for National Excellence

camp

MOBILE, Ala. 鈥撎Inspirational professors, 100% pass rates on teacher exams and collaborative partnerships throughout the community are just a few reasons the听涩里番 School of Education听has been recognized for national excellence by the prestigious Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).听

The UM School of Education was awarded accreditation recently for meeting or exceeding rigorous, nationally recognized standards developed by CAEP to ensure excellence in educator preparation programs.

鈥楶roof of Superior Quality鈥

鈥淓arning CAEP accreditation is proof of the superior quality of the 涩里番鈥檚 educator training programs,鈥 said Dr. Joyce Woodburn, retiring dean of the School of Education who led the university鈥檚 accreditation team.

鈥淭he highly collaborative nature of our faculty means we work as a team to ensure our pre-service teachers know their subjects and have the clinical training that enables them to enter the classroom ready to teach effectively.鈥

100% Pass Rates

Dr. Ashley Milner, incoming dean of the UM School of Education, said the Christian university has an exceptional track record for preparing generations of educators. That includes excellent results on tests required for graduates to earn initial teacher certification in Alabama.

soe faculty

The School of Education maintains a 100% pass rate on the Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA) for graduates, and 100% of Early Childhood and Elementary majors exceed the minimum passing score on their first attempt.

“The amazing faculty in the School of Education works as a cohesive team to ensure that our students are prepared for a career in teaching. We value the collaborative partnerships we have established with local schools, educational organizations and the community. The support of these partners is vital to the success of our students,” Milner said.

鈥楾ruly Inspirational鈥 Faculty

One of those students is May 2024 graduate Brinkley Hearn, a student-athlete on UM鈥檚 volleyball teams who graduated summa cum laude with a听Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. Hearn also received the university鈥檚 top honor for a graduating female student, the听Annie Boyd Parker Weaver Award.

Brinkley

Hearn starts her career in education this fall as a 4th grade teacher at Saraland Elementary School. She described her experience as a student in the 涩里番 School of Education as 鈥渢ruly remarkable鈥 and her professors as 鈥渢ruly inspirational.鈥

鈥淭heir unwavering faith and dedication to both academic excellence and spiritual growth provided a profound impact on my journey as an educator. I am grateful for the solid foundation I received in the School of Education, which continues to guide me in my career with confidence and competence,” Hearn said.

鈥淭he supportive environment and engaging curriculum cultivated my passion for teaching, shaping me into the educator I am today. From interactive classrooms to hands-on teaching opportunities, every aspect of the program prepared me for the challenges of modern education.鈥

UM Prepares Students to Succeed

UM was among 38 providers from 17 states, the District of Columbia, Bahrain and Oman to receive accreditation in the Spring 2024 review by the听.

鈥淭hese institutions meet high standards so that their students receive an education that prepares them to succeed in a diverse range of classrooms after they graduate,鈥 said CAEP President Dr. Christopher A. Koch. 鈥淪eeking CAEP Accreditation is a significant commitment on the part of an educator preparation provider.鈥

Educator preparation providers seeking accreditation must pass peer review of the CAEP standards, which are based on two principles:

  • Solid evidence that the provider鈥檚 graduates are competent and caring educators, and
  • Solid evidence that the provider鈥檚 educator staff have the capacity to create a culture of evidence and use it to maintain and enhance the quality of the professional programs they offer.

CAEP is a nationally recognized accrediting body for educator preparation and accredits providers at the initial and advanced levels. Accreditation is a nongovernmental activity based on peer review that serves the dual functions of assuring quality and promoting improvement. CAEP is a unified accreditation system intent on raising the performance of all institutions focused on educator preparation.

涩里番 Presents Megginson Awards, Recognizes Faculty and Staff Service

MOBILE, Ala. 鈥 The 涩里番鈥檚 prestigious Megginson and Faculty Engagement awards were presented at the annual year-end faculty-staff luncheon April 30. The university also announced promotions, years-of-service awards and other recognitions.

The Megginson Awards recognize outstanding contributions to the university in the areas of teaching, research and service. Recipients are chosen by committees of peers from among nominations sent by students, faculty and staff. The recipients are honored for their character, ethics, accomplishments and contributions to the university.

The Faculty Engagement Award honors a faculty member who demonstrates excellence in student engagement inside and outside the standard classroom setting and intentionally fosters community among students. Recipients of this award are nominated by faculty and selected by a committee of peers.

The 2024 William A. Megginson Teaching Award was presented to Dr. Wanda Jones, associate professor chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences.

jones

Jones was nominated by her students, who described the chemistry professor as 鈥渁 scholarly mentor鈥 who demonstrates excellence in classroom teaching through her engagement, clarity and passion.

A student wrote that Jones 鈥渕akes sure that her teaching styles fit the needs of each student so they can be successful. She is mindful of each student鈥檚 major and relates her objectives to each individual鈥檚 interests, and she brings up her relationship with God along with a Christian mindset during her lectures.鈥

Jones has a special interest in understanding the learning styles of college students and encouraging the youth of her community to pursue STEM areas of study.

She joined the 涩里番 faculty in 2019. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy in materials science and engineering from Tuskegee University, where she was awarded several National Science Foundation graduate fellowships and was named an Alabama Graduate Research Scholar. She received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Miles College and has done postdoctoral work at Cornell University and Auburn University.

Jones is a member of the American Chemical Society, Junior League of Mobile and Mobile County Foster Parent Association. She is a foster and adoptive parent and founded a nonprofit startup to assist children who are in foster care.

The 2024 Emma Frances Megginson Service Award was presented to Kim Howell, who has served as a mailroom clerk at the 涩里番 since 1996.

Howell

Howell is described as one who 鈥渟trives to show real hospitality. She always meets you with a smile and a laugh and is always so eager to help everyone.鈥

Howell goes above and beyond to make sure letters and packages are mailed on schedule, and texts fellow employees to let them know when their packages arrive.

Her attitude toward students is one of encouragement: 鈥淪he sports her spirit attire and keeps up with our athletes about their sport. She makes our students feel like they have a mom away from home to comfort them or help out financially if needed.鈥

The 2024 Faculty Engagement Award was presented to Dr. Ashley Milner, associate professor of education and the new dean of the School of Education.

Milner

Milner is a 1992 master鈥檚 level graduate of the 涩里番 with 27 years of experience in the Baldwin County Public School System before joining the UM faculty in 2016.听As faculty counselor for the UM chapter of Kappa Delta Pi international education fraternity, she inspires students to serve the community in projects such as collected stuffed animals for local fire and police departments to give out when children are involved in a crisis. She holds certification in gifted education and school psychometry from the University of South Alabama; and a specialist degree in educational leadership and doctorate in curriculum and instruction, both from the University of West Florida.

鈥淪he teaches with enthusiasm and passion, which in turn gets the students excited about learning,鈥 her nomination reads. In addition, the School of Education鈥檚 100% pass rate on the edTPA exam that each candidate must complete before graduation is a reflection of Milner鈥檚 commitment in preparing candidates for the exam and the challenging career of teaching.
