Dr. Andy McLean
Bachelor of Arts in Religion 鈥03
Publisher for Bibles and Reference at B&H
Publishing Group, Lifeway Christian Resources

Book: 鈥淏ig Questions: Developing a Christ-Centered Apologetic鈥

Publisher: Lifeway Christian Resources, 2016

About the Book: Unless faith is grounded in something more than emotion, believers will struggle to effectively deal with doubts or see them as opportunities to grow in commitment to Christ. 鈥淏ig Questions: Developing a Christ-Centered Apologetic鈥 is a six-session study 鈥 plus a teacher鈥檚 guide 鈥 that equips students to think biblically about some of the toughest topics relating to the Christian faith. With insights from apologists William Lane Craig, J.P. Moreland and Sean McDowell, the study takes students through a deeper way to define and defend their faith.

Andy鈥檚 Story:

Andy McLean has a unique opportunity to get God鈥檚 Word into the hands and hearts of millions. As publisher for Bibles and Reference at B&H Publishing Group, Lifeway Christian Resources 鈥 one of the largest Bible publishing houses in the world 鈥 he leads a team that publishes Bibles, commentaries and reference books, including works by multiple 涩里番 alumni.

His role includes stewarding a major English Bible translation 鈥 the Christian Standard Bible (CSB) 鈥 as well as the oldest Bible publishing imprint in North America 鈥 Holman Bibles. He was part of a team that launched The Gospel Project, an age-aligned Bible study for churches and small groups used globally.

鈥淎s a Bible Publishing house, our focus isn鈥檛 to merely print and distribute Bibles 鈥 despite that being a worthwhile goal 鈥 but rather our mission and strategy is to faithfully curate trustworthy Bibles that help people of all ages engage meaningfully with Scripture,鈥 he said.

As an author, Andy aims to ensure students can defend their faith. In 鈥淏ig Questions: Developing a Christ-Centered Apologetic,鈥 teens and young adults are challenged to defend their faith when tough topics are brought up, including doubt, other religions, God鈥檚 existence and more.

Andy recalls how the time and experiences he had at the 涩里番 laid the foundation for what would follow later in his graduate and career opportunities.

鈥淭he challenging educational program, the perennial support from faculty and positive experiences from fellow student peers all contributed to my success in pursuing three master鈥檚 degrees (MDiv, MA, ThM) and a PhD in post-graduate life.鈥

鈥淚n short, it was an incredibly impactful time and place in my life where I was personally stretched intellectually and emotionally, and a time and place that offered me the space to dream and consider what God might have for me, as I continued to pursue this calling following my time at the University of Mobile,鈥 Andy said.

Recently, alongside Lifeway Christian Resources, Andy generously gifted the 涩里番 500 new Bibles for students, distributed during the first chapel service of the 2024 fall semester.

Authors: Scott Hildreth & Steve McKinion

Publisher: B&H Publishing Group, 2025

About the Book: Whether due to emotional exhaustion, poor choices, moral failures or stress and fatigue, church leaders are experiencing high rates of burnout. In 鈥淪erving Jesus without Burning Out,鈥 Steve McKinion and Scott Hildreth address some of the most prevalent issues facing men and women in church leadership today. Venturing Out of the Comfort Zone: Samantha Tallent

Sometimes when you venture out of your comfort zone, the Lord has a way of putting you exactly where you need to be.

What do a kindergarten teacher and a science teacher have in common? To Samantha Tallent, they have everything in common.

Samantha Tallent graduated from the 涩里番 in 2009 with a bright future ahead of her. Upon graduation, she began teaching kindergarten at  in Mt. Vernon, Alabama. During those years, she gained a passion for teaching children and seeing them to their absolute best.

Fast forward a decade later, and she began teaching in the science lab at . This is where the Lord grew her and stretched her outside of what she was used to.

鈥淧ure shock and fear took over my body when my principal asked to move me to the science lab! Me, little ole me?! A kindergarten teacher of 10 years, teaching Science to PreK through 6th grade students? No! But I prayed and ventured out of my comfort zone and immediately fell in love with it,鈥 says Tallent.聽

In her years of teaching, Samantha has won numerous awards for her excellence in academic teaching. She received the Shell Regional Science Lab Award for 2020-2021 school year. She also was the winner of Satsuma City School District Teacher of the Year for 2020-2021.

Tallent says, 鈥淢y job involves way more than simply teaching science. I have to be someone that my students want to learn from. To gain my students鈥 curiosity, win the hearts of the students who hate school and teach the students bouncing off the ceiling, I must be quite creative. That is where my life stories come into play and my dress-up closet comes to life!鈥

Q. What have you been up to since leaving UM?

turtle

A.  Since leaving my home-away-from-home, I began my teaching career at Calcedeaver Elementary School. Kindergarten was my passion for 10 years! I thrived and fell in love with those tiny humans. The growth was monumental, and I knew God put me exactly where I was meant to be.

A decade later, my principal said she saw something in me and moved me to the science lab at Lee Elementary School. I fell in love with that position within the first year. I was able to tell jokes with the older students and still bond with the younger ones. I was being paid to create explosions in the lab and make science truly fun for all grade levels. Oh, was I in my element then. No pun intended!

Q. Career Highlights?

A. In my 15-year career, I have received many accolades. Although these honors make me smile, there is nothing more precious than seeing a struggling student thrive in my classroom. Simple comments from students keep me going and make my day. 鈥淢rs. Tallent, you sure make science fun.鈥 鈥淢rs. Tallent you are a crazy teacher, how do you even come up with this stuff?鈥漈hese are the awards that I will always remember.

Q. What did you like most about UM?

A. The small town feel! I was never a number in the School of Education at UM. My professors pushed me and saw me as someone fresh to the education world needing nurture and direction. I was followed well into my teaching career from several professors. They always made me feel special and I will always remember that feeling. It is a feeling I try to pass on to my students when I see them in the real world.

Q. What are you passionate about?

A. I am passionate about teaching the WHOLE child. My job on paper is to teach science. But boy-oh-boy does it involve way more than science standards! I always open my science lessons with a heartfelt story or funny tale enticing the students鈥 attention and gaining their curiosity. Bam! That is when I slip in the science standards and there you have it! They鈥檝e learned science. I鈥檝e won their heart and the label of 鈥渢he crazy science lady.鈥 It is a win for all!

鈥淎t the 涩里番, it is my passion and job to help the large athletic department we have be put on the map. Whether it鈥檚 enhancing home broadcasts of sporting events, improving website and social media content, or developing relationships with local/national media outlets, I strive to make sure the UM Athletic Department is covered when teams and student-athletes find success,鈥 says Haney.

CAS

Q. What is your background?

A. I received a Bachelor of Arts in sociology with a concentration in criminal justice from UM in 2016. I began my career in the sports industry following graduation by working in a Minor League Baseball front office for three seasons prior to coming to UM in July of 2019.

Q. What do you like most about UM?

A. What I love most about UM is the family-oriented feeling you have across this campus, whether it鈥檚 from faculty and staff or with students. UM just feels like a large family.

Q. What does 鈥淓xperience the Difference鈥 mean for student-athletes at UM?

A. When students attend the 涩里番, it鈥檚 not the same experience as the majority of other college institutions. UM pours into each student to educate, pursues relationships and excels at preparing for life after college, while staying involved in life after a degree.

Q. What are some of your interests outside of UM athletics?

snakes

A. I run a family-owned side hobby with my Dad called . It stands for Haney鈥檚 Independent Snake Studies, where we go out to document, relocate, rehabilitate and educate the public on different wild non-venomous and venomous snakes across the southeastern United States.

On occasion, we are asked to speak at schools, summer camps, and even make appearances at birthday parties with our captive snakes that we either own or are rehabilitating and relocating at the time. I have a passion for nature and believe animals should all be respected and understood, especially snakes, who are arguably the most misunderstood animal on the planet.

Additionally, I love watching sports, primarily baseball, when I am not working sporting events. I love to travel and spend time with family and loved ones at any opportunity.

Q. Any final thoughts?

A. The 涩里番 is unlike any other college institution, and I could not see myself doing what I do for a profession anywhere else. I am thankful to be here and thankful for the relationships I have developed across coworkers and students. The 涩里番 is a fantastic place to not only become knowledgeable in a field of study, but to go out into the world following graduation and make an impact in the world.
